This deliverable takes the form of a narrative review of conceptual and methodological literature on cultural literacy and arts education through a cross-disciplinary approach, including critical pedagogy, decolonization theory and community-based and art-based research. In the first stage, working groups of 4 to 6 researchers revised literature according to six categories: decoloniality, art education, multiliteracies, arts-based methods, community-based research and critical pedagogy. Finally, 425 references were systematically reviewed by a team of 15 reviewers from the five research institutions of the EXPECT_Art consortium.
Section 1 consists of a genealogical review of the notion of critical cultural literacy (CCL) and it discusses each of the three terms: literacy, cultural literacy and criticality. Section 2 explores 6 key notions that are connected to CCL: decoloniality and curriculum, art education and curriculum, critical pedagogy, multiliteracies, arts-based and community-based research, and cultural awareness. Section 3 highlights the specific relationship between CCL and local perspectives in Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia and Spain.
